SKULKESKOLEN - Energy Infrastructure Hike in Burkelandsfjellet with Ase Brunborg Lie

Ase Brunborg Lie invites participants to join an energy infrastructure hike at Burkelandsfjellet.

Through walking, silent listening, sensing, mapping and narration, the group will trace the planned route of the Samnanger power distribution line, where 420kV power towers up to 120 metres high — the so-called monstermaster — are proposed to be installed. Intended to supply power to Øygarden and offshore industrial sites such as the Troll oil field, the project has become a focal point for questions of energy transition, land use and ecological preservation.

Traversing mountains, sheep pasture, farmland, protected forest, and residential landscapes, the walk explores how contemporary energy infrastructures reshape relationships between land, extraction, and community knowledge. Returning to Bergen Kunsthall, participants will conclude with drawing exercises, reflection, and discussion.

10:00 — Departure from Bergen Kunsthall
11:00 — Arrival at Burkelandsfjellet (Osterøy, elevation 365 m). Hike and outdoor self-packed lunch.
14:00 — Return journey
15:00 — Arrival back at Bergen Kunsthall
15:00–15:30 — Coffee break
15:30 — Field notes sharing (if the weather is good, this takes place at Burkelandsfjellet)
17:00 — End of workshop

Participation is free, with places limited to 15 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for hiking, and bring a packed lunch and water.

This workshop is part of Brunborg Lie’s long-term project NIMBLEWEAVERS. Engaging with the layering of national climate policy, local ecologies, and rural livelihoods, the project examines how extractive logics, land use and preservation both shape and are shaped by the relationships we cultivate with land and community within the Nordhordland UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. NIMBLE WEAVERS is coordinated by artist Robin Everett as part of the NFR transdisciplinary research project ACTIONABLE at the University of Bergen, supported by Vestland fylkeskommune and Bergen Kommune.

Ase Brunborg Lie explores how to create in our present with associated philosophical and ethical questions, and works for more just possible futures. They point out blind spots in historical and social narratives and in built structures, and suggest alternatives to extractivism and human exceptionalism. Central to their practice is site-specificity and cross-pollination, inspired by queer-feminist, postcolonial and scientific thinking. Lie has completed the post-master programme Of Public Interest Lab at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. They hold an MA in Scenography from the Academy of Performing Arts, HIOF, and a BFAfrom Trondheim Art Academy, NTNU.
